Based on our far-flung travels and voracious catalog consumption, we offer some conclusions about where we think gardeners can find good plants in New England. The present index is intended to help you locate particular plants for your garden. These source lists refer only to the nurseries, garden centers, and hybridizers profiled in this book; it goes without saying that other good sources exist, both inside and outside New England.

The source recommendations below are organized by plant name and category (such as Roses or Perennials), specialized plants (such as Seacoast Plants and Cold-Hardy Plants), and useful nursery amenities (such as Display Gardens and Organic Growers). For ready reference, each entry refers to the state chapter (such as (MA) for Massachusetts) where nursery portraits appear in alphabetical order; the same device is used in the text where nurseries are cross-referenced. We have placed a star (*) next to those offering something exceptional in each category. The sources listed here are, of course, located in New England, and generally produce plants that are well suited to the climatic and cultural conditions of the region.
